A calm scenic stretch of the Ganga on the gentle Phool Chatti rafting route near Rishikesh

Phool Chatti is the gentlest way to raft the Rishikesh Ganga — nine kilometres of mostly calm water with six Grade II rapids spaced out along the way, ending at NIM Beach. There is no big Grade IV drop, no full-day commitment, just enough moving water to feel the river and a lot of scenery to take in between the rapids. Ages 12 and up, around 1.5 hours on the water. It is the route Rishikesh families and nervous first-timers actually enjoy rather than endure.

If you want a touch more punch, the Brahmpuri 7 km run mixes in some Grade II-III. For a real challenge, the Shivpuri 14 km half-day opens with a Grade IV. And for the big expeditions, see Marine Drive (24 km) and Kaudiyala (36 km). Our planning page compares every route side by side.

Who Phool Chatti is for

  • Families with kids 12 and up. The all-Grade-II water is the most child-friendly on the corridor — exciting enough to remember, gentle enough that parents relax too.
  • First-timers who are genuinely nervous about rafting. Phool Chatti lets you learn the river on easy water before deciding whether to come back for Shivpuri.
  • Scenic-float seekers. More quiet water means more time looking at the Himalayan foothills and less time bracing for the next drop.
  • Senior travellers in good health. The most senior-friendly grade on the river.
  • Anyone short on time. 1.5 hours on the water leaves the rest of the day for Rishikesh — ashrams, cafes, the evening Ganga aarti.

The Phool Chatti experience

The put-in at Phool Chatti sits on a quiet, pretty stretch of the Ganga. Most operators run a 15-minute briefing here — paddle commands, raft positioning, the float technique if you go in. On a gentle route the briefing matters less for survival and more for fun: it sets the crew up to paddle together and actually work the rapids rather than just ride them.

From there the river eases you in. Club House and Cash Flow are friendly Grade II wave-trains — enough splash to make everyone laugh, nothing that throws the raft around. Initiation lives up to its name as the gentle "now you're rafting" moment. Between the rapids the Ganga widens and slows, and this is where Phool Chatti earns its name as the scenic run — cliffs, forested banks, the occasional temple, time to actually look up.

Most operators stop at a safe beach midway for 20 to 30 minutes — a designated body-surfing pool where anyone who wants can float in the calm water, plus sunscreen and a breather. The back half runs Hilton, Double Trouble, and Terminator — all Grade II, all more bark than bite — into the NIM Beach (Nehru Institute of Mountaineering ghat) take-out. Total water time around 1.5 hours. You come off relaxed rather than wrung out — which is exactly the point.

Price and operators

Phool Chatti rafting through RaftingX is ₹805 per person (inclusive of GST and platform fee) — the same price you see when you book on the platform. Add-ons such as a premium photographer or hotel pickup outside Rishikesh town are extra. Group rates apply for 8 or more.

Standard inclusion: gear, certified guide, safety kayaker, GPS-tracked trip, basic GoPro footage, and operator transport between the Rishikesh meet-point and the put-in.

Group rates available for 8 or more rafters — Phool Chatti is a popular choice for family groups and mixed-age parties. Corporate offsite buyers: see our corporate offsite page.

Avoid the ₹300–₹600 advertised prices. Verified pricing covers gear, guide, kayaker, and a GPS-tracked trip end-to-end. Cheaper operators skip one or more of those — and on the river that gap is the whole game. The platform price is what you actually pay, fully accounted.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Phool Chatti rafting take?

Around 1.5 hours on the water plus an hour of overhead — count on a 3 to 3.5 hour door-to-door morning or afternoon from your Rishikesh hotel. The 9 km stretch is gentle, so the pace is relaxed rather than rushed.

Is Phool Chatti good for first-time rafters and families?

Yes — it is the calmest commercial route on the Rishikesh Ganga. All six rapids are Grade II, so you get the feel of moving water and a few splashes without the big Grade III-IV drops of the longer routes. It is the route to pick if you or your group are nervous about rafting, travelling with kids 12+, or want a scenic float more than an adrenaline hit.

What is the minimum age for Phool Chatti?

12 years and older. The gentle Grade II water makes it one of the two family-friendly routes (the other is Brahmpuri, 7 km). For more challenge at 14+, see Shivpuri; for 16+, Marine Drive and Kaudiyala.

How is Phool Chatti different from Brahmpuri?

Both are the gentle, family-friendly end of the corridor. Phool Chatti is longer (9 km vs 7 km) and runs all Grade II — the calmest, most scenic float, with more time on quiet water. Brahmpuri is shorter but mixes in some Grade II-III, so it has a touch more punch. Choose Phool Chatti for the relaxed scenic run, Brahmpuri for a shorter trip with slightly bigger rapids.

What rapids will I hit on Phool Chatti?

Six named Grade II rapids: Club House, Cash Flow, Initiation, Hilton, Double Trouble, and Terminator. All are gentle wave-trains with calm stretches between them — enough to feel the river without the intensity of the upstream routes. The rapid order shifts slightly by season as water levels change.

How much does Phool Chatti rafting cost?

₹805 per person (inclusive of GST and platform fee) — the same price you see when you book on the platform. Standard inclusion covers gear, certified guide, safety kayaker, GPS-tracked trip, and basic GoPro footage. Add-ons (premium photographer, hotel pickup) and group rates may vary. Treat ₹300–₹600 advertised prices with suspicion — those usually skip gear, guide, or safety cover.

Is Phool Chatti suitable for non-swimmers?

Yes. Certified whitewater life jackets (ISI-marked) are mandatory and your guide is swift-water rescue trained, with a safety kayaker on the water. On a Grade II route, going in is rare, and most Rishikesh rafters have never swum a stroke.

Is Phool Chatti just floating, or real rafting?

It is real rafting — you paddle, the guide calls commands, and the six Grade II rapids give genuine wave-trains and splashes. It is simply the gentlest grade on offer. If you want bigger drops, step up to Shivpuri (Grade III with a Grade IV opener).

Can senior citizens do Phool Chatti rafting?

Generally yes, for seniors in good health with no relevant medical conditions — the Grade II water is the most senior-friendly on the corridor. Anyone with heart, back, or mobility concerns should check with a doctor first, and tell the operator at booking so the guide is aware.
