Shivpuri is the half-day most rafters bookmark when they want the Rishikesh rafting experience without committing to a full-day expedition. Fourteen kilometres of the Ganga from Shivpuri to NIM Beach, eight named rapids, a beach stop midway through, and back to Rishikesh in time for a late lunch. Grade III water for most of the route with a Grade IV opener (Roller Coaster) that decides the rest of the day's tone in the first 10 minutes. Ages 14 and up, around 2.5 hours on water.
If you want a gentler route, see the Brahmpuri 7 km family run (Grade II-III, ages 12+). If you want more — twelve rapids, full day, the legendary stretch — see the Marine Drive 24 km expedition. Our planning page compares all three side by side.
Who Shivpuri is for
- First-time rafters who want a real rapid, not a watered-down intro. Shivpuri is the route most first-timers describe as "exactly what I thought rafting would be."
- Weekend groups from Delhi NCR. The half-day length fits a one-night Rishikesh trip — Friday drive up, Saturday morning raft, Saturday evening Ganga aarti, Sunday drive back.
- Couples and friend groups (14 and up, no swimming required). A natural group activity for friends planning a Rishikesh weekend.
- Corporate offsite groups doing the half-day team format. Long enough to bond on the water, short enough to leave the afternoon open for a debrief or beach session. See our corporate offsite page for groups of 20 to 200.
- Returning rafters who don't have time for Marine Drive. Shivpuri carries enough of the same rapids (Roller Coaster, Golf Course, Clubhouse) to feel like the full experience compressed.
The Shivpuri experience
The put-in sits 16 km upstream of Rishikesh town, on a stretch of the Ganga that runs between high cliffs on both sides — one of the prettier stops on the river. Most operators run a 15- to 20-minute briefing here: paddle commands, raft positioning, what to do if you go in, how to read the guide's calls. The crew gets used to paddling together for the first five minutes downstream — then Roller Coaster arrives.
This is the rapid the route is famous for. Grade IV, a sustained wave-train that drops the raft into a confused trough every few seconds for what feels like a full minute. It's the "is-this-too-much-for-me?" moment most first-timers laugh about afterwards. Roller Coaster decides the tone — you finish it, you know the rest of the day is yours.
From Roller Coaster the river settles into Grade III rhythm. Golf Course is wide with multiple lines through the rapid — the guide picks one, the crew paddles, and a good run rewards you with a beautiful 200-metre glide. Clubhouse is tighter and more technical — narrower channel, faster water, less margin for steering error. Double Trouble follows with two consecutive drops in quick succession. Then most operators stop at a safe beach for 20 to 30 minutes — sunscreen reapplication, water, a designated body-surfing spot where anyone who wants can float a couple of minutes in the safe pool.
The back half is Grade II to III: Initiation as a build-down rapid, Tea-Off as the last named feature before Hilton, the final big push before the take-out. NIM Beach (Nehru Institute of Mountaineering ghat) arrives by mid-afternoon. Total water time: 2.5 to 3 hours. Around four hours door-to-door from your Rishikesh hotel.
Most groups come off the river wetter, hungrier, and louder than they expected to be. That's a clean Shivpuri day.
Rapids you'll hit on Shivpuri
| # | Rapid | Grade | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Roller Coaster | IV | The famous opener — sustained wave-train, sets the tone |
| 2 | Golf Course | III | Wide rapid with multiple lines through |
| 3 | Clubhouse | III | Tight technical channel, less margin for error |
| 4 | Double Trouble | III | Two consecutive drops in quick succession |
| 5 | Body Surfing | II | Safe swim spot — guides may let you float |
| 6 | Initiation | II | Build-down rapid after the beach stop |
| 7 | Tea-Off | II | Last named feature before the take-out |
| 8 | Hilton | III | Final big push into NIM Beach |
The Roller Coaster opener is the route's defining feature — almost no other Rishikesh half-day puts a Grade IV in the first 10 minutes. The rest of the route runs Grade II to III. The rapid order shifts slightly by season as water levels change.

Price and operators
Shivpuri rafting through RaftingX is indicatively ₹1,500 – ₹2,200 per person across verified operators on the platform — depending on group size, day of week, and add-ons (premium photographer, cliff-jump where included, hotel pickup from outside Rishikesh).
Standard inclusion: gear, certified guide, safety kayaker, GPS-tracked trip, basic GoPro footage, and operator transport between the Rishikesh meet-point and the put-in.
Group rates available for 8 or more rafters. Corporate offsite buyers booking 20 to 200: see our corporate offsite page for the dedicated package.
Avoid the ₹300–₹600 advertised prices. Verified pricing starts around ₹1,500 for Shivpuri because the route runs gear, guide, kayaker shadow, and GPS-tracked trip end-to-end. Cheaper operators skip one or more of those, and the gap shows up the moment the river isn't behaving. The platform price is what you actually pay, fully accounted.

How long does Shivpuri rafting take?
Around 2.5 to 3 hours on water plus an hour of overhead — count on a four-hour door-to-door day from your Rishikesh hotel. Most operators run a morning slot (launch ~9 AM, back by ~1 PM) and an afternoon slot (launch ~12 PM, back by ~4 PM).
Is Shivpuri OK for first-time rafters?
Yes — Shivpuri is the most-booked first-timer route on the platform. The Roller Coaster opener (Grade IV) is real, but it is also short, well-known to the guides, and the safety kayaker is in position before you hit it. The rest of the route runs Grade II to III. The 14+ age minimum exists because the Roller Coaster intensity is not appropriate for younger rafters.
What is the minimum age for Shivpuri?
14 years and older. For 12+, see Brahmpuri (7 km, Grade II-III). For 16+, Marine Drive (24 km, Grade III-IV) is the full-day expedition.
How is Shivpuri different from Marine Drive?
Shivpuri is the half-day (14 km, ~3 hours water); Marine Drive is the full-day (24 km, ~4 hours water). Shivpuri has 8 rapids — Marine Drive has 12, including more Grade IV features. Shivpuri’s Roller Coaster opener is also on Marine Drive, plus Three Blind Mice and Return to Sender. Shivpuri is the iconic Rishikesh experience compressed to a half-day; Marine Drive is the same intensity sustained for twice as long.
What rapids will I hit on Shivpuri?
Eight named rapids: Roller Coaster (Grade IV opener), Golf Course (III), Clubhouse (III), Double Trouble (III), Body Surfing (II safe swim spot), Initiation (II), Tea-Off (II), and Hilton (III). The Roller Coaster opener is the defining feature.
How much does Shivpuri rafting cost?
Indicatively ₹1,500–₹2,200 per person across verified operators on the platform. Standard pricing includes gear, guide, safety kayaker, GPS-tracked trip, basic GoPro footage, and operator transport. Avoid travel-deal sites advertising ₹300–₹600 — those are almost always unlicensed operators.
Can I do Shivpuri in the morning?
Yes. Most operators run two slots: morning (launch ~9 AM, back by ~1 PM) and afternoon (launch ~12 PM, back by ~4 PM). Morning slots are usually less crowded and have better light for photographs. For weekends in peak season, book the morning slot one to two weeks ahead.
Is the water cold on Shivpuri?
Depends on the month. September to October: water around 18–22°C, refreshing. November to February: 12–15°C, properly cold — wear sport leggings and a snug synthetic top. March to May: 15–18°C, comfortable. June: 18–22°C as snowmelt picks up. Operators occasionally rent thin neoprene tops for ₹200–₹400 in winter — ask in advance.
Is Shivpuri family-friendly?
For families with kids 14 and older — yes. For families with younger children — no; the Roller Coaster opener is not appropriate for under-14s, and verified operators enforce the age limit. Family groups under-14 should book Brahmpuri instead.
Do I need to know how to swim for Shivpuri?
No. Certified whitewater life jackets (ISI-marked or international equivalent) are mandatory and trained guides handle swift-water rescue. The safety kayaker shadows the raft through Roller Coaster and every Grade III drop. Most Rishikesh rafters have never swum a stroke. The pre-trip briefing covers the float technique.
